Supporting students with paragraph writing

Once students have mastered basic sentence-level strategies, it’s a great time to turn your attention firmly towards paragraph writing.

The Writing Revolution, an invaluable resource for teachers of all kinds, is not only a tool for developing the command of the sentence. It is a framework for understanding and utilising the paragraph to organise thinking and writing.

In my recent talk for the Victorian DET, I explored some of the key methods for tackling paragraph writing with students. I covered the following main ideas in the talk:

  • Breaking paragraphs into manageable chunks

  • Planning and outlining paragraphs

  • Links between writing paragraphs and knowledge

  • Revising and editing

I hope this Professional Learning opportunity is of use to teachers of both primary and secondary students.
